Just three days before the Mustangs’ Fourth of July celebration at Hooker Field, the ballclub will face the USA National Team today at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Barry Powell returns for his second season with the Martinsville Mustangs and his first season as Head Coach, taking over for Rob Watt, who enjoyed much success in Martinsville posting a 85-76 record in three seasons. Coach Powell served as the Mustangs pitching coach during the 2007 season and will look to return the team to the Petitt Cup Playoffs for a third straight season.

Doug Gibson General Manager Of The Martinsville Mustangs

Doug Gibson returns to the Mustangs as General Manager for his fourth season in Martinsville and his Eighth Season in Collegiate Summer Baseball in 2008. Gibson was the Mustangs GM during its Inaugural Season in 2005 and will look to build upon on the great playoff run of 2007 heading into 2008.

BASSETT Head Varsity Football Coach James W. Gilbert

Coach Gilbert, a 1983 graduate of Fieldale-Collinsville High School, played football, basketball, and baseball. He received the Dr. Camden Memorial Award for athletic and academic achievement in 1982-1983. He graduated from Guilford College in 1987, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting while playing baseball. He presently teaches Mathematics at Bassett High School and has 19 years of coaching experience in football. He is in his 4th year as the Head Football Coach at Bassett. His other coaching experiences include 11 years in basketball, 8 as head coach at the community college level, 13 years in baseball with 4 as a head coach. He is married to Wendy and has two children, Cierra Nicole and Jacob William.

MARTINSVILLE, VA --- The Martinsville Mustangs are proud to announce the addition of an exhibition game to their 2008 schedule. The Mustangs will travel to Cary, NC to face Team USA at the Team USA Training Complex on Tuesday, July 1st at 5:00 PM. Team USA is made up of the Top Collegiate Players from across the country, including the very best underclassmen from the ACC, SEC, and other top college conferences.

Two boys soccer players from the Piedmont District received first team or second team Group AA all-state honors recently.
