Three goals from Alex Ovechkin. Two feet of snow on the ground. One big comeback against a detested rival, with punches and name-calling added for good measure.

The biggest number of all: 14, the length of a winning streak topped by just two other teams in NHL history.

What a Super Sunday it was for the Washington Capitals, who got a hat trick from their two-time reigning league MVP and made up a three-goal deficit to beat Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 in overtime.

Diamond Cavs get a workout

With or without snowflakes, Virginia baseball coach Brian O’Connor reminded his players of one constant: Omaha remains 1,186 miles away.

And for that reason, the Cavaliers practiced Saturday as though the storm that hammered Central Virginia did not exist.

Unfortunately for O’Connor, that practice was held indoors, something that has become a routine of late. It remains unknown if Virginia will be able to practice without hindrance outdoors before the season opener at East Carolina on Feb. 18.

“We are not the only team in the country that cannot be outside right now,” O’Connor said. “We understand that, but we are fortunate that the stadium renovation offered us the opportunity to get our work done indoors.”

Scott stumbles on offense

On Virginia’s first possession of the second half in its overtime loss to Wake Forest on Saturday, UVa coach Tony Bennett devised a play for Mike Scott to go right at the foul-plagued Al-Farouq Aminu.
The play worked perfectly. Well, almost perfectly.
The problem — Scott couldn’t finish off the sequence. The 6-foot-8 junior missed a windmill dunk when a layup probably would have worked just fine.
