The yearly event, open to pre-1977 vehicles, will begin at 1 p.m. today at the Dutch Inn and continue from roughly 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Level Ruritan Park.
Selling the Petty legacy[Jun. 13, 2008] His very name is synonymous with NASCAR.
Richard Petty. The King of stock car racing.
He’s a man whose character stands squeaky clean and above reproach. A family man, whose refusal to allow beer sponsorship to have anything to do with his race team is regarded as a throwback to the good old days of stock car racing
Learn from the Mustangs[Jun. 13, 2008] The Martinsville Mustangs will hold a youth baseball camp from 10 a.m-12:30 p.m. Monday-Wednesday at Hooker Field.
The camp is open to boys and girls ages 7-15. It costs $50 per child, a fee that includes a camp T-shirt and five tickets to any future Mustangs home game.
Space is limited, and campers should arrive by 9:30 a.m. Monday. For more information, visit the team’s Web site at www.martinsvillemustangs.com.
Ranking the greatest Finals performances[Jun. 12, 2008] The NBA Finals have produced a ton of incredible performances in the three decades since the NBA-ABA merger, starting with Bill Walton's supreme effort against the Sixers in 1977 and going all the way through to the troika from San Antonio in last year's sweep of Cleveland.
Opening Shots[Jun. 12, 2008] SAN DIEGO -- Tiger Woods grimaced and pursed his lips, unable to disguise the pain Thursday in the U.S. Open.
No, it wasn't his left knee, though that was still tender from surgery.
It was the three-putt to end his round at Torrey Pines, leaving him four shots behind a pair of surprising leaders and one behind Phil Mickelson.
Nothing torments Woods more than that.
A special group graduates from the trenches[Jun. 12, 2008] Every football fan knows the importance of offensive line play, and Martinsville High School fans should know they’ve lost quite a group in the trenches.
The Bulldogs’ John Fitzgibbons, Adam Flint, David Gawroriski and J.D. Tyree started on the O-line last fall, and next year each player will join a college roster.
Mustangs de-fang Copperheads at Hooker, 14-2[Jun. 12, 2008] By RUSSELL CARTER - Bulletin Sports Writer
The Martinsville Mustangs’ Chris Peters worked the mound for six innings, struck out six, gave up two hits and helped the Mustangs knock off the CPL Western Division-leading Asheboro Copperheads 14-2 Wednesday night at Hooker Field.
It wasn’t just Peters’ dominating performance on the hill that led to Martinsville’s fifth win, however, as the Mustangs put on a hitting clinic, tallying 13 hits in the win much to the dismay of Copperhead coach Tim Murray.
Tiger or Phil? Phil or Tiger? The choice is easy.[Jun. 11, 2008] Rooting for Tiger Woods is like rooting for Justin Timberlake to get lucky, Exxon to hit a gusher, Bill Gates to find a twenty on the sidewalk. It takes no imagination. It takes no courage. What's the point? It's 1-to-5 he's going to win anyway, whether you cheer or not. Makes no difference to him. It's like rooting for erosion.
Rooting for Phil Mickelson, on the other hand, is like rooting for the salmon to eat the bear. It takes faith. It takes forgiveness. It takes Tums. Mickelson is a roller coaster in an earthquake. One shot will be so inspired you'll cover your mouth in astonishment. The next will be so Spam-brained you'll slap your forehead in disbelief. It's like watching a blind guy jaywalk across Hollywood and Vine. Your fist is in your mouth the whole way.
Former Patriot and Mustang Casey Hodges was drafted by the Braves[Jun. 11, 2008] Casey Hodges recently became the first Patrick Henry Community College baseball player drafted by a major league club.
Hodges, a pitcher, was taken in the 23rd round by the Atlanta Braves.
The Franklin County native was a member of the 2005-06 Patriot baseball team managed by former head coach Barry Nelson. Hodges transferred to PHCC after competing for one year with the Radford University Highlanders.
A pitcher and infielder, Hodges was a member of the Martinsville
Giants DE Strahan to retire after 15 years, seven Pro Bowls[Jun. 9, 2008] Michael Strahan has decided to retire from the NFL after 15 seasons.
The defensive end's agent, Tony Agnone, confirmed the decision, which was firmed up over the weekend. Strahan had planned on notifying the New York Giants on Monday, but most of the Giants' front-office officials were attending a golfing event, so Strahan left a message before announcing his decision.
"It was important that my teammates knew which way I was going before they got on the field to start the work to defend our title," Strahan told FoxSports.com, which first reported his retirement plans. "It's time. I'm done."
kasey Kahne wins at Pocono, 3rd victory in 4 weeks[Jun. 8, 2008] LONG POND, Pa. (AP)— Kasey Kahne won for the third time in the last four events with a dominating run Sunday at Pocono Raceway.
Kahne started from the pole, overcame an early pit road penalty and led a race-high 69 of the 200 laps to continue the roll he’s been on since winning the All-Star race last month.
Kahne vowed to take momentum from that $1 million win and use it to turn around his season. He’s done so, winning the Coca-Cola 600 two weeks ago and now the Pocono 500 to climb into championship contention.
Brian Vickers was second for his best finish since joining Red Bull Racing at the start of last season. Denny Hamlin was third.
