Burress would serve one-game suspension, halve financial penalty[Sep. 27, 2008] If the settlement is reached, Burress will still miss the Giants game on Oct. 5 against the Seattle Seahawks but he will lose just half of the $235,294 he is being docked for a two-week suspension.
As a final condition, sources said, the Giants would agree not to pursue action against Burress seeking any bonus money he could owe under a forfeiture clause in a $35 million contract extension he signed just before the regular season opener. Under the clause, Burress could lose a portion of his bonuses if he is suspended or fined for conduct detrimental to the team. His escalator bonuses for future salary also could be affected without an agreement by the Giants to forgive the penalty.
Big 12, Big Ten, SEC teams benefit from USC loss[Sep. 26, 2008] For the first month of the college football season, the burning question wasn't which two teams would play for the BCS national championship.
Instead, the question on everyone's mind was: Which team would play USC?
The Trojans looked so dominant in early-season victories over Virginia and then-No. 5 Ohio State that it seemed to be a foregone conclusion they'd run through their Pac-10 schedule with little resistance and finish the season with an unblemished record.
Lightning Strikes[Sep. 23, 2008] Starting 0-2 is bad enough. San Diego won't have to worry about 0-3. Looking like a team predicted to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, the Chargers dominated Brett Favre and the Jets 48-29 Monday night.
Harris tops 1,000 for season in win[Sep. 22, 2008] At this point, every team in the state should know that Patrick County running back John Harris is a force on the field.
Rushing for 268 of Patrick County’s 275 total yards, Harris broke the 1,000-yard mark for the 2008 season on the way to a 36-24 win over Lord Botetourt at home Friday night.
Bassett rallies for win[Sep. 21, 2008] Good teams find a way to get it done.
For the 15th straight regular season game, Bassett (4-0) did just that Friday, downing Christiansburg 21-14.
“They find ways to win. They’ve been doing it for a long time,” said Bassett coach Jay Gilbert of his players. “We’ve got a big poster up in our locker room: Whatever it takes, find a way to win. And our kids do. They find a way to win.”
Modifieds turn 500[Sep. 18, 2008] When the green flag drops on the Made In America Whelen 300 on Saturday at Martinsville Speedway, it will be a historic marker on the timeline of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour: the 500th race. “We couldn’t think of a more appropriate place for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series to celebrate its 500th race. We’ve raced Modifieds here since day one … our very first race here was a Modified race,” said Clay Campbell, president of the speedway. “The Modified Division was special to my grandfather (Martinsville founder H. Clay Earles) and it is to me. It’s a great anniversary for us to celebrate this week.”
Jeter singles in first inning to nab 1,270th hit in Yankee Stadium[Sep. 17, 2008] Derek Jeter got to first base and heard the cheers. He had broken Lou Gehrig's record for hits at Yankee Stadium with his first-inning single, and the sellout crowd of 52,558 kept on applauding. Finally, after close to a minute, Jeter took off his helmet and waved it.
"I'm always a little uncomfortable in those situations," Jeter said.Jeter's hit off Gavin Floyd was his 1,270th in the 85-year-old ballpark, scheduled to close Sunday. But the skidding Yankees, who almost surely will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1993, lost to the Chicago White Sox 6-2 Tuesday night.
Cowboys able to land final punch[Sep. 16, 2008] All the buildup to a "Monday Night Football" game in Week 2 between the Eagles and Cowboys had started to feel a little overdone. But in the wake of the Cowboys' thrilling 41-37 victory, perhaps we understated the potential for a memorable finish.
The NFC East title wasn't decided in one evening, but it sure felt like it after watching two bitter rivals trade the lead seven times and combine for 78 points. Perhaps the most surreal part of the evening was that the second half actually felt like a defensive struggle.
Cougars aiming high[Sep. 15, 2008] There was a time in the not-too-distant past when a 26-point Patrick County win would’ve caused celebration and a sense of satisfaction across the program.Expectations are higher in Patrick County this season, however. Patrick County (2-1) ran to a 33-7 win over Staunton River (0-4) on Friday night in Stuart. Three different players scored for the home team, led by a trio of touchdowns from senior running back John Harris.
Sports Roundup BHS escapes[Sep. 15, 2008] A late field-goal pushed Bassett past Hidden Valley, 10-7, in Roanoke on Friday night.“I was just glad to escape with a win,” said Bassett head coach Jay Gilbert. “We didn’t come out very well at the beginning. Obviously, I take the blame for not having them ready to come out.” Bassett’s Tyler Martin broke the 7-7 tie with a 25-yard field goal with 2 minutes, 22 seconds left in the game.
Rain cancels qualifying[Sep. 13, 2008] Rain washed out NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying for the second straight week. This time, though, Joey Logano gets to race.
A week ago at Richmond the rainout left the 18-year-old phenom out of the lineup and frustrated because he was entered in a fourth Joe Gibbs Racing car that had no owner points. This week, Logano is entered in the No. 96 Hall of Fame Racing entry that is in the top 35.
Angels' K-Rod ties Thigpen for saves in a season[Sep. 12, 2008] Seattle scored three runs in the eighth, put runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth, and Rodriguez got the call. Greeted by rousing cheers as he took the mound, he got the final three outs Thursday night's 7-4 win for his record-tying 57th save of the season.
