[Sep. 14, 2009] The Martinsville Bulldogs fumbled an option-pitch on the third play of the game and Devron Dillard of (Eden, NC) Morehead scooped and scored from 27 yards out to put the Panthers ahead of Martinsville 8-0. Martinsville would finish with 5 turnovers, which Morehead turned into 22 points, and fell to 1-2 on the season with a 34-10 home loss to Morehead in the ESPN 1160 AM/BTW-21 Piedmont District Game of the Week. Martinsville heads to Liberty this Friday while the ESPN 1160 AM/BTW-21 P.D. Bassett sneaks past Carroll County 21-20.
[Aug. 30, 2009] After jumping out to a 14-0 lead just 2 minutes into their home contest with Carroll County, the Bassett Bengals watched the Cavaliers march 65 yards on the opening drive of the third quarter. While Carroll County capped the drive with a 5 yard touchdown pass fro Blake Bowman to Ulises Moreno, the Cavaliers squandered 2 time outs and missed the Extra point. Both of those errors proved costly, as Bassett eeked out a 21-20 victory (Photo Kenny Webster, Article Johnny Buck).

Cerreto named Offensive P.O.Y.
[Aug. 21, 2009] After a season in which he destroyed records like Kyle Busch destroys guitars in Victory Lane, Martinsville Mustangs First Baseman Phil Cerreto was named 2009 Coastal Plain League Offensive Player of the Year. Cerreto finished first in the CPL in Hits (72) and total Bases (120) and his total base number was 19 more than any player in the League. Vickers plays fuel mileage game to perfection
[Aug. 17, 2009] With a spot in the 2009 Chase for the Spring Cup Championship on the line, Brian Vickers rolled the dice and coasted past the finish line in the Carfax 400 Sunday at Michigan his first Sprint Cup victory in 2009. Entering the weekend in 14th position in the points standings (and 99 points out of 12th place) a fuel-mileage issue would have crippled Vickers' chances of making the Chase. Tech RB Evans tears ACL, out for season.
[Aug. 12, 2009] Virginia Tech suffered a blow to its ACC and National Title aspirations when it learned Tuesday evening that RB Darren Evans suffered a torn ACL in a Tuesday practice and will miss the 2009 season. Evans has already used a redshirt year. RB Josh Ogelsby is expected to assume the role as the starter, although redshirt freshman Ryan Williams and true freshman David Wilson (G.W. Franklin County looks for fresh start with Jones as Fall Camps Begin
[Aug. 3, 2009] With high school football season around the corner, most fans have been waiting til August 3, when the kids return to the practice fields. Fans will have lots of things to keep their eyes on as practices begin and the helmets and pads go on beginning Monday, August 10. A couple of story lines include the schedule changes for various Piedmont District teams, as well as Franklin County and how the Eagles respond to new Head Coach Chris Jones (Article Courtesy Roanoke Times).
 
Scruggs Powers Mustangs to Double Header Sweep, keeps teams slim CPL Playoff hopes alive
[Jul. 31, 2009] Playing as the visiting team in your own ballpark can confuse some players, but it had no impact on the Martinsville Mustangs offense Thursday night. In game one of an "away and home" double header with the Gastonia Grizzlies, Martinsville used a 7 run top of the 9th inning, capped by Matthew Scruggs' grand slam, to post outscore Gastonia in a 17-10 victory.

Montoya's speeding penalty allows Johnson to capitalize for Brickyard 400 crown
[Jul. 27, 2009] Juan Pablo Montoya had the dominant car for most of the Brickyard 400, leading the field for 116 laps and building a much as a 5 second lead over the rest of the field. Unfortunately for Montoya, NASCAR flagged him for speeding on pit road with 35 laps remaining. As a result, Mark Martin restarted in the lead with 24 laps to go before Jimmie Johnson passed him and held off the 50 year old to win his second straight Brickyard 400 and the third of his career. Vick's Lawyer Denies Rumors of Trip to Strip Club with Iverson
[Jul. 24, 2009] Despite reports from an unidentified DJ at the Virginia Beach Strip Club Atlantis, the lawyer for former Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick has vehemently refuted the allegations that his client was seen at the adult entertainment complex. Vick's Lawyer, Lawrence Woodward, said of the allegation: "It is absolutely, categorically false." Mustangs capture franchise record 8th straight home win
[Jul. 23, 2009] Nick Squeglia went 6 full innings and allowed zero earned runs on just 1 hit, as the Martinsville Mustangs earned a 9-1 victory over the Gastonia Grizzlies on Wednesday night at hooker field. Another Positive Meth Test for Mayfield
[Jul. 16, 2009] Jeremy Mayfield has reportedly tested positive for methamphetamine for the second time in 2 months, this according to various sources in NASCAR. Mayfield has again issued statements vehemently denying these reports, but NASCAR apparently has a sealed affidavid from Mayfield's step-mother saying she wittnessed him using meth, which he made for personal consumption, more than 30 times over a 7 year period (Photo Courtesy The Age, Article courtesy ESPN.com).
 
Martin wins series high 4th race of 2009 with victory at Chicagoland.
[Jul. 12, 2009] Mark Martin had the dominant car for most of Saturday night at Chicagoland, but needed a dominat restart with 2 laps left to hold off fellow Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon. Gordon, operating on a fresher set of tires, had the inside lane on the lap 265 restart, but Martin got a better jump and his dominant car put Gordon away to give the 50-year old his 4th victory of 2009 (Article courtesy FoxSports.com; Photo courtesy ChicagoTribune.com).
 
Truex to race for Michael Waltrip Racing beginning in 2010
[Jul. 9, 2009] One of the most sought-after free-agents ("to be") in the NASCAR Sprint Cup free agent pool for 2010 has found a new home. Michael Waltrip Racing announced Tuesday afternoon that Martin Truex, Jr. will leave Earnhardt Ganassi Racing at the end of the 2009 season and drive the No. 56 Napa Toyota beginning in 2010.
