Despite playing without starting quarterback and leading rusher Jacob Reynolds, the Patrick County ground game proved too much for Bassett (3-6 Overall, 2-1 Piedmont District) in the Cougars 22-0 in Stuart. Senior Josh Walker made the most of his Senior Night, amassing 202 of the Cougars 294 rushing yards, as Patrick County (4-5 Overall, 2-1 Piedmont District) controlled the game on the ground, without completing a pass (Photo: Kenny Webster of BTW 21, Link: Roanoke.com).
UNC FB Center Dyer on verge of comeback.[Oct. 28, 2009] After suffering a shoulder injury prior to North Carolina's 12-10 victory at UConn, it appeared Center Lowell Dyer's playing days in Carolina blue might have ended. Instead, following an extensive rehab process, the man initially pegged as the starting Center on the Tar Heels' patchwork Offensive Line appears on the verge of returning to the field. Dyer is listed as "probable" for Carolina's Thursday night affair at Virginia Tech. Pre-game coverage is set for 6:30 with kickoff at 7:30 on ESPN Radio 1160 AM (Photo/Article: InsideCarolina.com).
Tunstall rallies past Patrick County in 5 games[Oct. 28, 2009] When the Patrick County Volleyball team held a 2 games to 1 lead over undefeated Tunstall in Stuart Tuesday night, it looked like the Cougars might spring an upset. Instead, the Lady Trojans (18-0 Overall, 8-0 Piedmont District) rallied past the home standing Cougars and remained undefeated in 5 games (Article: Martinsville Bulletin).
Eagles muster little offense but slip past defunct Redskins 27-17.[Oct. 27, 2009] Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receiver DeSean Jackson took an end around from Donovan McNabb 67 yards for a Touchdown, on the second play of the game, and put Philadelphia ahead of the Washington Redskins 7-0, almost from the game's outset. That play was one of two big plays from the second year player out of Cal, and really, that's all the Eagles offense mustered against a listless Washingon Offense. Then again, the Eagles really didn't need much offense on a night which saw the Redskins' much-maligned attacking unit surrender six sacks and fail to execute on a number of other plays. To compound the Redskins' problems, Tight End Chris Cooley is likely out for the season with a fractured Tibula (Photo and Article: WashingtonTimes.com).
Virginia Native Denny Hamlin wins at the Commonwealth's Paperclip.[Oct. 26, 2009] Denny Hamlin didn't need to use his front bumper to beat Jimmie Johnson to the Checkered Flag in Sunday's Tums Fast Relief 500 at the Martinsville Speedway. The Chesterfield native out-ran Johnson, leading the final 139 laps and surviving a green-white-checkered finish to capture his second Cup Series win at the historic Paperclip track (Photo: Kenny Webster of BTW-21 TV, Article: Franklin News Post).
Cerrato: Zorn to be 'Skins Coach for Rest of 2009 Season.[Oct. 23, 2009] To the shock of few, the Washington Redskins have endured another tumultuous season in 2009. Still, despite handing the offensive play-calling duties to a man who was out of football some two weeks prior (Sherman Lewis), Redskins Vice President of Football Operations said Friday "Jim Zorn is the head coach of the Washington Redskins and will be for the rest of this season, and hopefully into the future" (Photo: UPI.com; Article: FoxSports.com
'Skins layers seeking endorsement of Head Coach Jim Zorn[Oct. 15, 2009] Amid the increased scrutiny surrounding Washington Redskins Head Coach Jim Zorn, some members of the 53 man roster are turning to management in hopes that the team will publicly back their embattled sideline leader (Article: ESPN.com/ Photo: NBCSports.com)
UVA follows ACC theme of the day, blows away Indiana 47-7.[Oct. 11, 2009] Many anticipated the retirement of Former All-American Safety Anthony Poindexter's jersey to be the highlight of UVA's homecoming contest against Indiana. Instead, Poindexter, who is the Wahoos' secondary Coach, watched his defense help steal his day. UVA Cornerback Ras-I Dowling forced a fumble on Indiana's Opening drive, which Rodney McLeod returned 38 yards to the Indiana 32. The Cavaliers converted that into a UVA TD and gave the Cavaliers the first of many TDs in route to the Wahoos' 47-7 victory over Indiana (Article: TheSabre.com, Photo: TheSabre.com).
Hokies start on fire, demolish Boston College 48-14.[Oct. 11, 2009] Entering Saturday's contest having lost 3 straight to Boston College and coming off a lackluster effort against Duke in the prior contest, #5 Virginia Tech made sure they nothing stood between them and their 5th sraight win. Tyrod Taylor threw 2 early TDs and the Hokies limited BC to just 6 yards of total offense in the first half of Saturday's contest, in route to a 48-14 victory over the Eagles (Photo: Albany Times-Union; Article: TechSideline.com).
Va. Tech looks to beat B.C. after 3 straight loses in Series.[Oct. 9, 2009] Two years ago, Boston College QB Matt Ryan (a.k.a. Matty Ice) led the Eagles on a last second scoring drive to stun Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium. The Hokies were unable to avenge that loss in Chestnut Hill, MA last year and look to snap its 3 game skid to the eagles when the teams square off tomorrow in Blacksburg (Noon, Raycom/LF; Photo/Article: TechSideline.com).
Offensive Struggles help UVA defeat UNC 16-3.[Oct. 3, 2009] An offense best described as a "work-in-progress" and more accurately termed anemic contributed to another UNC loss, as UVA knocked off Carolina 16-3 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. It's the fourth straight win in the rivalry for the 'Hoos and their second consecutive at Carolina (Article: Ed Lane).
Northern Dominance Continues in Made in America Whelen 300 with Stefanik's win.[Sep. 27, 2009] The drought since the mid 1980s will continue for another year. Using smart fuel-conservation strategy and a bit of luck, Michael Stefanik of Coventry, Rhode Island emerged from a wreck on lap 186 as the leader and held off a late charge from Todd Szegedy (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Ryan Preece (Berlin, Conn.) to take the checkered flag for a race record fifth time (Article: Edward Lane; Photo: Kenny Webster).
Redskins reach a new low, lose 19-14 at Detroit.[Sep. 27, 2009] Just when Washington Redskins fans didn't think things could get more embarrassing, they did. For the 1st time in 20 games and nearly 2 years, the Detroit Lions have won a game, defeating the Washington Redskins 19-14 at Ford Field. Despite decent games from Jason Campbell (27-41, 2TDs) and Santana Moss (10 receptions, 178 yards, 1 TD), the Redskins defense struggled to apply pressure to Lions Rook QB Matt Stafford and fell to 1-2 on the season (Photo: Associated Press; Article: Washington Post).
Ryan Williams sets the tone on the ground, Hokies maul Hurricanes 31-7.[Sep. 26, 2009] Tyrod Taylor's oft-criticized passing efforts only netted Virginia Tech 98 yards and the Hokies QB went 4-9 through the air. The catch is simple: Tech didn't need many catches as Ryan Williams ran a career high 34 times for 152 yards and 2 TDs as the Hokies dominated on both the offensive and defensive lines in a 31-7 victory over Miami (Photo courtesy Miami Herald).
Gilbert runs wild but injurs leg as Franklin County pulls away from Bassett 35-3.[Sep. 26, 2009] If you had told the average Bassett fan that they would be trailing Franklin County 14-3 at intermission, they might have been satisfied. Unfortunately for the Bengals, Chris Hughes intercepted Bassett QB Mason Mables on the third play of the second half and returned the ball 37 yards for a touchdown to give Franklin Count a 21-3 lead. After that the Eagles' stellar RB Tae Gilbert went to work, finishing the evening with 168 yards rushing on 23 carries. Gilbert, though, injured his left leg late in the 4th quarter and his status for the Eagles next contest (Friday, October 2 @ Martinsville, 7:00 Kick on ESPN Radio 1160 AM) is uncertain (Photo: Kenny Webster; Article: Roanoke Times).
Pat Tryson sees time at Penske Racing trimmed[Sep. 22, 2009] On the verge of heading to Michael Waltrip Racing in 2010, Kurt Busch's Crew Chief Pat Tryson has seen his alloted time at the Penske Racing Shop trimmed as the team turns some of its attention to 2010 (Article: FoxSports.com, Photo Courtesy UsRacing.com).
