Fortunately for the Warriors, Anthony Hairston answered with a shot in the paint with fewer thatn 15 seconds remaining, to give Magna Vista a 49-48 lead. Magna Vista (2-4 Overall, 1-0 Piedmont District) followed that shot with back-to-back stout defensive series to escape Tunstall (3-9 Overall, 0-2 P.D.) 51-48. Hairston and M.J. Pilson led the Warriors with 14 points each, while Shawn Ferrell set the tone for Tunstall with 14 points.

UNC slides past Rutgers, 81-67, but Roy Williams not happy.[Dec. 29, 2009] The UNC Tar Heels tallied another win in non-ACC play, pulling away from visiting Rutgers for an 81-67 win Monday night. Despite the victory, UNC Head Men's Basketball Coach Roy Williams was non too pleased with his team's effort, even losing his cool in the contest's waning moments (Photo/Article: InsideCarolina.com).
Bassett rolls past McMichael 58-27 in Magna Vista Holiday Classic.[Dec. 29, 2009] Rarely is a blowout considered ugly for the winning team. Despite this infrequent occurence, Bassett Head Ladies' Basketball Coach Melissa Blair was not overly satisfied with her team's performance in their 58-27 rout of McMichael High School Monday in the Magna Vista Christmas Classic. Lady Warriors hang on for win over Morehead.[Dec. 29, 2009] Despite entering the fourth quarter with a seven point deficit, the Morehead Lady Panthers didn't give up, pulling to within two points of Magna Vista (71-69) in the Magna Vista Holiday Classic. Fortuntely for the Lady Warriors, they held on for a 73-69 win, largely due to Jacole Hairston's effort. The Lady Warrior led all scorers with 33 points, while chipping in with nine rebounds, six steals, and three assists. Redskins "VP of Player Personnel" Cerrato "Resigns;" Washington looking to Allen?[Dec. 17, 2009] After "overseeing" the Washington Redskins front office the past two seasons, Redskins VP of Player Personnel Vinny Cerrato has "resigned," according to FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer. The 'Skins are apparently turning their attention to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders Head Coach Bruce Allen, to serve as Cerrato's replacement (Photo: ESPN980.com; Article: FoxSports.com)
UVA Soccer wins College Cup in penalty kicks, 3-2, over Akron.[Dec. 14, 2009] The Virginia Cavaliers needed a bit more than regulation to claim its sixth College Cup Championship, but did so with a 3-2 defeat of Akron in penalty kicks. London, who served as linebackers coach from 2001-2004 at the University of Vriginia, returns with a 5 year deal which will pay him $1.7 million annually (Photo/Article: TheSabre.com).
Groh "Not Retained" as UVA Head FB Coach.[Nov. 30, 2009] At his post-game press conference following Virginia Tech's 42-13 defeat over his UVA Cavaliers, the Wahoos' head football coach Al Groh read a poem which indicated his 9 year tenure with the program was on the verge of ending. Almost 18 hours later he was right. Groh and all but 2 of his assistants (Defensive Backs Coach Anthony Poindexter and Recruiting Coordinator Bob Price) were fired, following the team's 3-9 season (Photo and Article: TheSabre.com).
Patriots ride tenacious D to rout of Tidewater.[Nov. 29, 2009] Looking a little sluggish in their first game since Thanksgiving, the Patrick Henry Patriots men's basketball team used a spirited motivational talk from Head Coach Kenny Wade, plus some aggressive defense, to erase an early 8 point home defitit to Tidewater Community College (2-5 Overall) Saturday. PHCC (5-2 Overall, 1-1 Region X) never let up, leading by as many as 27 points on the way to a 94-72 win (Photo: BassettSports.com, Article: Martinsville Bulletin).
Hamlin wins the battle but Johnson makes history with 4th Cup Crown.[Nov. 22, 2009] Chesterfield, VA native Denny Hamlin won his 4th race of 2009, but the 4th that deservedly garnered the main headlines was Jimmie Johnson's 4th consecutive Sprint Cup Title. Such a run speaks to Johnson's dominance, as well as the run of his parent organization, Hendrick Motorsports, which finished the year with its drivers taking the top 3 spots in the Sprint Cup standings. Mark Martin finished second on the year, while Jeff Gordon finished 3rd (Photo: Ducksters.net ; Article: FoxSports.com).
Late-season surge points to NFL future for some UNC Defenders.[Nov. 16, 2009] As the UNC's Football team has experienced a late season resurgence, the Carolina D has garnered much of the credit for jelling as a unit and torturing opposing offenses. As Greg Barnes of InsideCarolina.com explains, that points to a future in the NFL for a trio of the junior defenders. The question remains: does the first paycheck hit their bank accounts in 2010 or 2011 (Photo/Article: InsideCarolina.com)?
Magna Vista comes full Circle, Wins Piedmont District FB Crown with 22-14 win at Bassett.[Nov. 9, 2009] A year after going 0-10 and posting yet another winless season, Magna Vista's football program has capped off its Piedmont District turnaround with a 22-14 victory at Bassett. #5 seed Bassett edges #4 seed Magna Vista in Piedmont District Volleyball Tournament Quarterfinals.[Nov. 4, 2009] Despite their two Piedmont District Volleyball wins coming via forefit, the Bassett Lady Bengals knew they could play with the top teams in the District. Bassett proved it Tuesday night, edging a young but feisty Magna Vista (13-10 Overall, 3-6 Piedmont District, both include District tournament) team in 5 games (25-22, 15-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-8). Tunstall JV Volleyball captures first win over Bassett...and Piedmont District JV Championship.[Nov. 4, 2009] Bassett's Junior Varsity volleyball team finished their regular season at 17-3 Overall and 8-0 in the Piedmont District. Still, they knew the Tunstall Lady Trojans would give them a great game for the JV District Championship. Tunstall did just that, knocking off the Lady Bengals in 4 close, hard fought games (25-21, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-21) to claim the Piedmont District JV Volleyball Championship. Tunstall finishes its season at 16-6 Overall, 6-3 Piedmont District, while Bassett concludes its season 17-4 Overall, 8-1 in the Piedmont District (records include Piedmont District Championship Game; Article Chase Young - Martinsville Bulletin).
