Although Hewitt reportedly says it's unlikely he'll take the Red Storm job if offered, Mark Bradley of AJC.com says it's best for everyone involved if he does.
Little E blames profanity laced rant on speeding penalty.[Mar. 24, 2010] When Dale Earnhardt Junior speaks, most people listen. And when he says something that's not deemed "family friendly," critics don't hesitate to raise their hands with questions. Following a profanity laced rant at Bristol, outsiders wanted an answer for what prompted the not so family friendly word choice. Turns out it was a speeding penalty on pit road (Photo: A.P.; Article: FoxSports.com).
Carolina on to Semi-Finals!...of NIT[Mar. 24, 2010] Once pegged as the root of all Tar Heels evil, Larry Drew appears to be sprouting the wings of an angel. And not Lucifer either! The much-maligned point guard continued to used the NIT as a spring board for silencing critics as he scored chipped in four clutch points in the final minute of a 60-55 win at UAB. With the victory over the Blazers, Carolina advances to the NIT Final 4 in New York (Photo/Article: InsideCarolina.com).
Eagles reportedly listening to offers for McNabb.[Mar. 24, 2010] Rumors have popped up throughout Donovan McNabb's tenure in Philly that he would be traded from the Eagles. Unlike past off-season talk, these rumblings appear to have wings. Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid confirmed that his club is being entertained by offers for all three signal callers, including McNabb (Photo/Article: Philly.com).
Virginia Tech pulls out win against UConn, advances to NIT Quarterfinals.[Mar. 23, 2010] Even if it's the NIT, in post-season play they don't always care how you win, just if you win. Seemingly out to prove a point in this year's NIT, Virginia Tech used a Malcom Delaney jumper with 14 seconds remaining to pull out a hard-fought 65-63 win over UConn in Cassell Coliseum Monday night. The win puts the Hokies in the NIT quarterfinals against Rhode Island on Wednesday evening (Photo/Article: TechSideline.com).
GM Wren says newcomers helping Braves' team unity.[Mar. 23, 2010] Almost every roster in sports experiences year-to-year turnover. The Atlanta Braves, despite a bevy of young players, are no exception. Still, as David O'Brien of the AJC.com says, GM Frank Wren seems pleased at how the additions are passing the test of team unity.
No Salary cap means less free-spending, more dumping deadweight.[Mar. 22, 2010] SInce 2006 the NFL Players Association took the position that once the salary cap left, there would never be a return. The NFL PA may want to rethink that stance. Turns out the owners awoke somewhere between 2006 and March 5, 2010 (the day the cap "died") to the realization that not only was there no maximum cap, there was no minimum spending mandate and teams could release players whom they deemed "deadweight" with no salary cap hit since the cap no longer exists (Photo: Getty Images; Article: Philly.com).
Mountaineers roll past Morgan State despite slow start.[Mar. 19, 2010] Starting a game can often foreshadow a dominating effort. Just not for the opposing team. #15 seed Morgan State jumped out to a 10-0 lead over #2 seed West Virginia, before the Mountaineers awoke from their late sleep, ran into the HSBC Center,a nd past the Bears, 77-50. With the victory, the Mountaineers will take on the winner of #7 Mizzouri and #10 Clemson (Photo: NY Daily News; Article: WashingtonPost.com).
Cook's Grand Slam propels Tunstall over Gretna.[Mar. 18, 2010] What started off as a pitchers dual ended in a big time hit. Looking for a true ace after the departure of starting southpaw Joe Mantiply (he graduated and is now on the Va. Tech baseball team), Tunstall benefited from starter Ben Cobbs' 5 scoreless innings and James Turner's 3 solid innings in relief (Turner also took the win), before Dylan Cook belted a Grand Slam to straight-away center in the bottom of the ninth, to give te Trojans a 5-1 walk-off win in their season opener (Photo/Article: GoDanRiver.com).
Bassett softball, boys soccer both capture wins.[Mar. 18, 2010] Another beautiful spring day in Southside Virginia means many local teams took to the fields. In addition to wins by Bassett's softball (4-1) and boys soccer (3-2) over Christiansburg, Martinsville's girls tennis team also captured their first team win of the year. For more local scores....(Article: Martinsville Bulletin).
PHCC Lady Patriots roll to NJCAA Quarterfinals.[Mar. 18, 2010] 10 days of rest clearly proved more beneficial than harmful for the Patrick Henry Lady Patriots. PHCC jumped to an early 14-3 lead over Prince George's Community College and rolled to at 93-50 victory. The win allows the Lady Patriots to advance to the NJCAA Women's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals (Photo: BassettSports.com, Article: Martinsville Bulletin).
Roanoke Catholic's Gaither steps down.[Mar. 18, 2010] One of the more well-respected Coaches in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association, Roanoke Catholic's Joe Gaither is stepping down. The Celtics' head boys basketball coach guided his team to 2 State Championships and a 127-48 record in his 6 year tenure (Photo/Article: Roanoke.com).
Delhomme's shrewd moves helped him land deal in Cleveland[Mar. 18, 2010] It's hard for anyone to debate that the Carolina Panthers overestimated the value of their former quarterback, Jake Delhomme, when they gave him a 6 year $42 million extension in the 2009 off-season. Yet when Delhomme visited Cleveland after the Panthers parted ways with him, he brought along some savvy business pracices, says Andrew Brandt of NationalFootballPost.com (Photo/Article: NationalFootballPost.com).
Hokies need to $how Greenberg the love.[Mar. 17, 2010] Since the ACC expanded to 12 teams in the 2004-2005 season, Virginia Tech's Men's basketball team has had the fourth best regular season record. Most of that should be attributed to Head Coach Seth Greenberg. However, with recent openings at Seton Hall and St. Johns (both essentially in Greenberg's native New York City), it seems fairly obvious to ESPN 1160 and Will Stewart of TechSideline.com that the Hokies need to "$how Coach Greenberg the love." Regular season action under way for local sports.[Mar. 17, 2010] The regular season for spring sports like softball, tennis, baseball and golf began on Monday, with Bassett's girls tennis team and Patrick County's baseball (against Franklin County) team capturing wins and Martinsville's boy's tennis team falling. The action continued across the Southside Tuesday...(Article: MartinsvilleBulletin.com).
Dillon's 7 scoreless paces Tunstall in season opening win.[Mar. 16, 2010] After 27 years with Coach Roger Cook at the helm of Tunstall softball, everyone involved with the program has come to expect wins. Thus, it's understandable when new Coach Caine DeVivi took over for the retired Cook. The initial results, though, looked very similar. In Coach DeVivi's first game at the helm of the Trojan softball program, Megan Dillon hurled 7 scoreless innings and drove in the only run in a 1-0 season-opening victory over Pittsylvania County rival Gretna (Photo/Article: GoDanRiver.com).
