In his debut start, QB Aaron Rodgers guided Green Bay to a win and officially ushered in a new era.
Johnson wins the race; Bowyer gets in the Chase[Sep. 8, 2008] In a race postponed from Saturday night by the threat of Tropical Storm Hanna, Johnson held off Tony Stewart in a thrilling side-by-side battle in the closing laps at Richmond International Raceway to win his second consecutive race, his fourth of the season and the 37th of his career, tying him with Bobby Isaac for 16th on the all-time victory list.
Bulldogs even record with victory over Rustburg[Sep. 7, 2008] Going into Friday night’s game against Rustburg (0-3), Martinsville coach Matt Foutz said he wasn’t worried about scores or stats; he just wanted the team to finish what it started.
The Bulldogs (1-1) did, grabbing the first win of the season by a 42-22 final.
“We played pretty well,” Foutz said. “Like they say, you get some good breaks because you make some big breaks. I thought we played hard and made some things happen.
Hanna's rain, wind shifts Cup race to 1 p.m., Nationwide to 7 on Sunday[Sep. 6, 2008] Anticipating strong winds and possible flooding in the Richmond area from Tropical Storm Hanna, Saturday night's Sprint Cup race was postponed until 1 p.m. Sunday.
Also, Friday night's Nationwide Series was washed out and will be run at 7 p.m. Sunday.
The decision on the Cup race was made late Friday afternoon after a meeting between NASCAR and Richmond International Raceway officials and consultation with state and local officials.
Redskins Can't Topple Giants[Sep. 5, 2008] It was bright lights, big city for the Redskins as they kicked off the 2008 NFL regular season--on national television--against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants on Thursday night. They could not play spoilers to the Giants' Super Bowl Party, falling at the Meadowlands.
Giants give Burress five-year, $35 million extension[Sep. 5, 2008] The New York Giants agreed to a new deal with Super Bowl hero Plaxico Burress hours before the season opener against the Washington Redskins on Thursday.
The five-year, $35 million contract is worth $11 million in the first year.
"We always remained hopeful that it would get done before the season started," general manager Jerry Reese said. "It came down to the last few minutes and we're happy to get it done so we can move forward in our season. Plax is happy to get the contract done as well. It took a little longer than we expected it to take, but Plax was professional about it the whole time. We're excited and happy that it's over and we're ready to move forward into this new season."
Panthers reduce roster to 53[Sep. 1, 2008] Carolina made 23 roster moves, which included releasing safety Terrence Holt and waiving defensive end Stanley McClover, to reach the 53-player roster limit for the regular season.
Extra Points: Dealing With Reality[Sep. 1, 2008] It was not the best of opening games, not the appetizer you would have whipped up to the 2008 season to quell the hunger pangs of a long summer waiting for some football. The third quarter was winding down, a team from the western extreme of Louisiana that hardly anyone in these parts had heard of was leading the Tar Heels by a touchdown, and a soaked and sodden crowd in Kenan Stadium was wondering what all these great expectations were about.
JJ All Day (And Night)[Sep. 1, 2008] Jimmie Johnson dominated in SoCal sun and won under Fontana lights, making sure nobody forgets he is the two-time Sprint Cup champion. Consider Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards on notice.
Bengals remain perfect[Aug. 31, 2008] t’s called a quarterback sneak for a reason, and Bassett quarterback Boo Woods ran it to perfection. The elusive 201-pound field general took his first snap of Friday’s game 69 yards for a touchdown, and it seemed as if no one on Patrick Henry’s defense saw it coming.
Football goes full tilt[Aug. 29, 2008] FRIDAY’S GAMES Patrick Henry 0-0 at Bassett 1-0 The Bengals will face an unusual offense tonight when Roanoke’s Patrick Henry High School brings its single-wing attack to Bassett. The Group AAA school traditionally has good athletes, though it didn’t run the single wing last season.
