There are still several top recruits who have yet to put pen to paper, though this is just a matter of time. Most recruits committed to their school of choice in ink. The biggest winner of the day, of course, was Florida State. Take a minute and read how important this day is to colleges across the U.S. (Photo/Article SI.com)
1920s Reporter and the Patriots[Feb. 3, 2011] Yesterday on Southside Connection, we talked briefly about the 1920s reporter who has interviewed the likes of Phil Mickelson, Eli Manning, Gregg Popvich, and others. Despite this, the opportunity never arose for us to play the audio. We highly recommend clicking the link and getting a taste for Scoops Callahan (Photo TheUnTicket.com/Link YouTube.com).
UNC Starting to Look Like Contenders[Feb. 2, 2011] "Hope" is probably the dirtiest four lettered word. However, if your a North Carolina basketball fan, there is reason for hope. The 'Heels soundly defeated Boston College on the road last night, 106-74. UNC is hot lately, and it's mainly because Roy Williams has his freshmen playing like upperclassmen. If this continues, there's reason for hope in Chapel Hill (Photo NewsDay.com/Article FOXSports.com).
Harrison Barnes Starting to Come Around[Feb. 1, 2011] We're getting close to the end of conference play in college basketball and starting to see which teams are pretenders and which are contenders. So far, it has been a down year for the UNC Tarheels. Fans should not be surprised as the team lost a ton of talent and, as a result, is significantly younger. The ray of hope was young Harrison Barnes. With the regular season coming to a close in the next several weeks, Barnes is getting hot at just the right time (Photo BasketballElit.com/Article FOXSports.com)
Is Duke Just a Pretender?[Jan. 31, 2011] St. John's embarrassed Duke on Sunday, 93-78. The Red Storm were relentless on the defensive and offensive side of the basketball and never allowed the Blue Devils to get rolling. Duke's only remaining out of conference game left is Temple, meaning it seems they won't get a chance at a real quality win. So, on to the bigger question: are the Duke Blue Devils just pretenders? Which Classes Need a Big Push Before Signing Day?[Jan. 28, 2011] Wednesday is National Signing Day for college football. All across America, college football fans will be glued to their computers and televisions to find out which prospects are going where. Some schools, however, including the University of Florida (which has never had a recruiting class outside of the top 25) need a big push before Wednesday to ensure a good class. Is your school among those? Scout.com will let you know (Photo BCSKnowHow.com/Article Scout.com).
The Best Game You Probably Didn't See[Jan. 27, 2011] Last night featured a marquee match-up between #9 BYU and #4 San Diego State. BYU's leading scorer, Jimmer Fredette, also happens to lead the nation in scoring. The Atzecs, previously undefeated, aren't too shabby themselves, led by pointguard, DJ Gay. Jimmer Fredette rose to the occasion, posting 43 points in a huge win for the Cougars. (Photo OTRSportsOnline.com/Article AP).
Turns Out Jay Cutler isn't the Least Tough Quarterback in the NFL[Jan. 26, 2011] We all have heard by now about members of the NFL ripping Jay Cutler for not returning for the NFC Championship game. Most of us know by now that a majority of players who tweeted their thoughts have since back peddled a bit. What almost no one knows is that there is a starting quarterback who is less respected for his toughness than Jay Cutler. Who is this glass jawed signal caller? Why don't we ask the Detroit Lions' Zack Follet (Photo/Article DetNews.com)
Jets' CB Antonio Cromartie Give His Input on the Labor Situation[Jan. 25, 2011] The Jets' season may be over, but that won't stop them from running their mouths. Obviously, the labor situation and, more than likely, upcoming lockout is something which weighs heavily on all of the players' minds. Tom Brady spoke out about the possibility of a lockout, and now Antonio Cromartie added his input. As you can probably imagine, it was bulletin board material (Photo Zimbio.com/Article ESPNNewYork.com)
It's a Packers and Steelers Super Bowl, But the Real Story is Jay Cutler[Jan. 24, 2011] The Packers and Steelers advanced to play Super Bowl XLV in Dallas. For the Steelers, it will be their eighth appearance in the big game, tying them for the most all time. The Packers, ironically, mirrored the 2005 Steelers by winning all of their games on the road as a Wild Card team to make it to the NFL's biggest game. Despite all this, the real story from the weekend is Jay Cutler. The Chicago Bear's signal caller left the NFC Championship game in the third quarter with a knee injury, and was subsequently blasted by his peers. Should Cutler have stayed in? Was his knee hurting that badly? Only Jay Cutler knows the answers to those questions (Photo/Article SI.com)
Hokies capture important 74-57 win at Maryland.[Jan. 21, 2011] Playing a "complete ballgame" from start to finish, the Virginia Tech Hokies used Erik Green' career-high 24 points to rout Maryland 74-57 in College Park, MD. The loss was the Terrapins' worst ever at the Comcast Center, which opened in 2002 (Photo/Article: HamptonRoads.com).
New York Jets: Which Side Do You Land On?[Jan. 21, 2011] One thing is for certain: the New York Jets are a polarizing team. Our ESPN Southside crew isn't the only bunch divided on how to feel about this team. ESPN's own, Rick Reilly, also can't seem to get a handle on the team. While there are many things to hate about the Jets, there are also many things, at least from the media's perspective, to love about them. So where do you stand on the New York Jets? Coach Williams not exactly using coach's show to cozy up to "Carolina fans."[Jan. 20, 2011] College coaches often use "Coaches Shows" as a means to improve their image and connect with fans. Until your fans turn on you and your players. UNC head men's basketball coach Roy Williams may have shown great restraint during Monday's Coach's show, but blasted callers after Tuesday's 75-65 win over Clemson (Photo/Article: NewsObserver.com).
First Look: NFL Mock Draft[Jan. 19, 2011] The NFL Draft is rapidly approaching. While the season might not be over for four teams, the rest of the league is free to look ahead at some of the players who are available. The Carolina Panthers have the first overall pick. Many thought they would take Andrew Luck, however the Stanford quarterback opted to finish his degree. Who will the Panthers take first? Only time will truly tell, but that won't stop us from taking a quick peek (Photo/Article FOXSports.com)
Favre Files Retirement Papers (Again); How Will He Be Remembered?[Jan. 18, 2011] Love him or hate him, you have to recognize Favre's accomplishments. The NFL record book is littered with his name in several categories, including most touchdowns (508) and interceptions (336). He also has had several off the field issues, most recently with Sterger, but also with drugs when he entered rehab in 1996. Easily one of the most polarizing figures in professional sports, one has to wonder how Favre will be remembered (Photo Technorati.com/Article ESPN.com)
UNC pounded 78-58 at Georgia Tech.[Jan. 17, 2011] Critics have often proclaimed that Georgia Tech has failed to reach it's potential, given the talent of their men's basketball team. Sunday UNC looked more like the fit for that criticism. Poor shooting (27.6 % from the floor) and even more porous defense (Georgia Tech shot 49.2% from the floor) contributed to the Yellow Jackets 20-point steamrolling over the visiting Tar Heels (Photo: NJ.com; Article: InsideCarolina.com).
