That is exactly what the sport got on Sunday as Trevor Bayne, at 20 years and one day old, won one of the biggest races of the season. Bayne is sure to remember his second career start. Though not eligible for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this year, many believe Bayne could be the next big thing in auto racing (Photo Zap2It.com/Article FOXSports).
Don't Miss Out on a Weekend with ESPN Southside[Feb. 18, 2011] This is one of the busiest weekends we at ESPN Southside will have. Friday is a basketball triple header, starting with the PHCC Lady Patriots and the Nelson Automotive Pregame Show at 2:45. After that, it'll be the conclusion of the Piedmont District Girls Basketball season, with the consolation game between #2 Magna Vista and #5 Martinsville beginning at 6 PM. The championship game will follow, as #3 Patrick County looks to give #1 Basset a run for its money. The final games for the boys will be Saturday beginning around 6:00, kicking off with #4 Tunstall challenging #3 Martinsville, then #2 Bassett looking to finally take down #1 Magna Vista. CBSSports.com: Does the NBA have the authority to address increasing franchise irrelevance?[Feb. 17, 2011] In the summer of 2010, Lebron James and Chris Bosh exercised their free-agent rights to leave their respective cities (James-Cleveland, Bosh-Toronto) and join Dwayne Wade on the Miami Heat. Since then the Heat have blossomed while the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors have experienced losing streaks of more than 10 games and slipped to irrelevancy. CBSSports.com's Ken Berger analyzes this situation and if the NBA can (or wants) to fix it (Photo/Article: CBSSports.com).
Offensive woes continue for UVA in 56-41 home loss to #5 Duke.[Feb. 17, 2011] Newport News Daily Press columnist David Teel noted on Wednesday's edition of "Southside Connection," how the loss of Mike Scott had hindered Virginia offensively. What has ensued has been a steady string of solid defensive performances that the Cavaliers have rarely been able to maximize, due to a woeful offense. That trend continued Wednesday night at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA, as UVA suffered a 56-41 home loss to #5 Duke (Photo: US Presswire; Article: DailyPress.com).
PHCC names Fall 2010 Student-Athletes of the month.[Feb. 16, 2011] In some college athletic circles, the term "Student-Athlete" has quotes because the "student" part comes into question. Not a Patrick Henry Community College, where an impressive number Patriots and Lady Patriots made the Dean's List and Honor's List in the Fall 2010 academic year, including Lady Patriots basketball star Tareka Caesar, pictured above (Photo: BassettSports.com).
NFL and NFLPA Plan a Last Minute Meeting[Feb. 16, 2011] Rumors circulated that the NFL and NFLPA needed a break from the negotiating table. One side claimed the other was not negotiating in good faith, which led to hurt feelings all around. Thankfully, the most powerful, and watched, men in sports decided that they needed to put their egos aside and try one last meeting before the current CBA expires on March 3 at 11:59 PM (Photo/Article FOX Sports)
Kansas State Upsets Newly Top-Ranked Kansas[Feb. 15, 2011] Kansas players knew teams would be gunning for them after they were named the best NCAA men's team in the country. They had to know that their rivals, Kansas State, would be especially ready for the two teams' showdown last night in Manhattan. A preseason top 5 team, Kansas State's problem isn't talent, but lack of consistency. Last night the Wildcats were consistent enough, as they defeated the Jayhawks 84-68 (Photo/Article Kansas City Star).
Busch wins Bud Shootout as Denny Hamlin is penalized for late pass.[Feb. 13, 2011] It was only a 75-lap event, but Saturday's Bud Shootout provided plenty of excitement (and controversy) for NASCAR as the prelude to the sport's premiere event next weekend: The Daytona 500. Kurt Busch staved off a late and "illegal" charge from Denny Hamlin to capture the Bud Shootout (Photo: Getty Images; Article: SI.com).
North Carolina pulls out road win at Clemson 64-62.[Feb. 13, 2011] Freshmen Harrison Barnes and Kendall Marshall combined to score 18 or UNC's last 19 points Saturday, as the #21 Tar Heels pulled out a 64-62 win at Clemson's Littlejohn Coliseum. The win gives Carolina a season sweep of the Tar Heels and prevents Clemson from securing an mpressive win to help its NCAA tournament resume (Photo/Article: InsideCarolina.com).
Virginia falls to .500 overall with 63-56 loss at Florida State[Feb. 12, 2011] Michael Snaer scored 16 points for Florida State, helping the Seminoles overcome the loss of leading scorer Chris Singleton to a 1st half ankle injury and giving FSU a 63-56 home win over UVA. The win moves FSU to 18-7 overall and 8-3 in ACC play, keeping them comfortably in 3rd place. For the Cavaliers, the loss drops them to 12-12 on the year (Article: DailyProgres.com).
Jerry Sloan Resigns After 23 Years[Feb. 11, 2011] The longest tenured coach in professional sports, Jerry Sloan, announced his resignation yesterday. Just four days prior, he accepted a one year extension. Rumors are that Sloan and current player, Deron Williams, had a blow up behind closed doors and this sparked Sloan's decision. Regardless of the 'why', Sloan will be missed. Since his hire in 1988, the NBA saw 247 coaching changes. The reason for this, was Sloan's consistency through all 23 years (Photo/Article Yahoo!).
Duke Trails Early, Wins Late Against UNC[Feb. 10, 2011] Everything seemed to be going Carolina's way at the half. They were up 16 in Cameron and worked the ball well down low. Unfortunately for the 'Heels, the fifth ranked Blue Devils regrouped at the half and surged back to win at home, 79-73. Nolan Smith put up a career high 34, but it was Seth Curry who really sparked the comeback (Photo/Article CharlotteObserver.com)
For NCAA Freshmen the Time is Now[Feb. 9, 2011] So much of college basketball relies on incoming freshmen. Most of these players are one-and-done's, so it's important that they get hot when the limelight burns bright. That being said, UNC's Harrison Barnes isn't the only freshman turning it on at the right time. Luke Winn takes a look at this year's NCAA freshmen and how they're all starting to pick up their play (Photo/Article SI.com).
Let's Go Racing[Feb. 8, 2011] The 2011 NASCAR season is fast approaching. Teams are all gearing up for Daytona on February 20th. One team, with an iconic name, Richard Petty Racing, is looking for a real bounce back year. ESPN's Ed Hinton thinks that if Petty's squad can financially rebound, there's no reason why this shouldn't be one of the best years in a long time for NASCAR (Photo/Article ESPN.com)
10 Super Bowl Studs[Feb. 7, 2011] The Green Bay Packers won Super Bowl XLV last night in Dallas. It is the 13th NFL Championship for the Packers, and their fourth Super Bowl. After an injury laden season, Green Bay needed backups and role players to step up big. Check out 10 players who shined when the light was brightest (Photo/Article FOXSports.com).
Much maligned Larry Drew II transfers from UNC.[Feb. 4, 2011] Often loathed throughout his 2 1/2 years as a point guard at UNC, Larry Drew II has transfered effective immediately. Drew started the Tar Heels' first 17 games before freshman Kendall Marshall assumed the starting point guard role 4 games ago (Photo/Article: InsideCarolina.com).
