Mustangs capture franchise record 8th straight home win
[Jul. 23, 2009] Nick Squeglia went 6 full innings and allowed zero earned runs on just 1 hit, as the Martinsville Mustangs earned a 9-1 victory over the Gastonia Grizzlies on Wednesday night at hooker field. With the win the Mustangs not only improve to 16-26 in the overall Coastal Plain League (Summer Collegiate League) standings and 9-7 in the second half, the 'Stangs also set a franchise record with their eighth consecutive home victory (Article Courtesy Martinsville Bulletin; Photo courtesy Kenny Webster).
 
Another Positive Meth Test for Mayfield
[Jul. 16, 2009] Jeremy Mayfield has reportedly tested positive for methamphetamine for the second time in 2 months, this according to various sources in NASCAR. Mayfield has again issued statements vehemently denying these reports, but NASCAR apparently has a sealed affidavid from Mayfield's step-mother saying she wittnessed him using meth, which he made for personal consumption, more than 30 times over a 7 year period (Photo Courtesy The Age, Article courtesy ESPN.com).
 
Martin wins series high 4th race of 2009 with victory at Chicagoland.
[Jul. 12, 2009] Mark Martin had the dominant car for most of Saturday night at Chicagoland, but needed a dominat restart with 2 laps left to hold off fellow Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon. Gordon, operating on a fresher set of tires, had the inside lane on the lap 265 restart, but Martin got a better jump and his dominant car put Gordon away to give the 50-year old his 4th victory of 2009 (Article courtesy FoxSports.com; Photo courtesy ChicagoTribune.com).
 
Truex to race for Michael Waltrip Racing beginning in 2010
[Jul. 9, 2009] One of the most sought-after free-agents ("to be") in the NASCAR Sprint Cup free agent pool for 2010 has found a new home. Michael Waltrip Racing announced Tuesday afternoon that Martin Truex, Jr. will leave Earnhardt Ganassi Racing at the end of the 2009 season and drive the No. 56 Napa Toyota beginning in 2010. Judge temporarily lifts Jeremy Mayfield's indefinite suspension.
[Jul. 1, 2009] U.S. Districk Court Judge Graham Mullen concluded that "the likelihood of a false positive test in this case is substantial," in reference to NASCAR Driver Jeremy Mayfield's oft-questioned positive test for methamphetaimes.
 
NASCAR aims to 'prove' Mayfield tested for Meth.
[Jul. 1, 2009] The battle between NASCAR and driver Jeremy Mayfield continues to get uglier by the day. NASCAR has now stated that it aims to prove that the Cup driver and "former" owner (his ownership was transfered to his wife Shana) tested positive for Methamphetamines, despited Jeremy's repeated denial of using Meth.
 
ACC Paces all Conferences in NBA Draft, sees seven players selected in round 1.
[Jun. 26, 2009] Duke's Gerald Henderson (12th to Charlotte) and UNC's Tyler Hansbrough (13th to Indiana) were the first of an impressive seven ACC players selected in the first round of the NBA Draft. Other notables include Carolina's Tywon Lawson (18th to Minnesota and rights traded to Denver) and UNC's Wayne Ellington (28th to Minnesota). Carlisle golfers Adkins, Jensen set to square off in VSGA Junior Match Play Semifinals Friday, June 19.
[Jun. 19, 2009] Carlisle's Dylan Jensen (Seeded 12th) defeated Michael Swope of Richmond 6 and 5 in the first round at the VSGA Junior Match Play tournament, then knocked off Jack Wilkes of Roanoke with a birdie on the first hole of round 2, to reach the Semifinals. Jense will square off against fellow Chiefs golfer Jack Adkins, who reached the semifinals with a first round win over Charlottesville's Landon Weiss and a quarterfinals win over Roanoke's Ben Firebaugh (Article courtesy Martinsville Bulletin).
 
Carolina Bullpen Implodes, surrenders 8 runs in 7th inning as Arizona St. eliminates Heels 12-5.
[Jun. 19, 2009] UNC held a 4-0 lead over Arizona State entering the bottom of the 5th inning in a College World Series elimination game, but Kole Calhoun struck again smacking a grand slam to knot the score at 4-4. Carolina then kept even with the Sun Devils until the bottom of the 7th, when the bullpen unraveled and surrendered 8 runs. Arizona State went on to eliminate the Heels 12-5 and end Carolina's season at 48-18. Cavs squander 4 golden opportunities, end season with 4-3 loss in 12 innings vs. Arkansas.
[Jun. 18, 2009] Andrew Darr's RBI Double in the Top of the 12th proved to be the hit which officially eliminated the Cavaliers, but the big story of the night for UVA's basebll team might have been the opportunities they squandered. Virginia failed to score with a runner on third in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th innings, and Darr's RBI Double proved the difference as Arkansas defeated 4-3 in the College World Series. Carolina staves off elimination in CWS with 11-4 win over Southern Miss, will take on Az. State Thursday at 7 PM
[Jun. 17, 2009] After struggling to put up runs in a 5-1 loss in ten innings Sunday against Arizona State, the UNC bats got back on track in a big way, as they exploded for 23 hits in an 11-4 victory over Southern Miss in the College World Series Tuesday afternoon. Dustin Ackley led the onslaught going 5-6 with 3 RBI. With the win, USM is eliminated, while UNC will face Arizona State Thursday (7 PM ESPN 2) in an elimination game.
 
Martin fuels well, wins Cup race at Michigan.
[Jun. 14, 2009] Jimmie Johnson led most of the race and Greg Biffle had the lead on the final lap, but it was Mark Martin who played the fuel mileage game to perfection and took the checkered flag in the Lifelock 400 from Michigan. Both Biffle and Johnson ran out of fuel in the waning laps, allowing Martin to take his 3rd win of the 2009 season.
 
ESPN the Magazine: NASCAR Driver Jeremy Mayfield tests positive for Meth
[Jun. 10, 2009] In the most disturbing twist to the Jeremy Mayfield saga, ESPN the Magazine's Ryan McGee is reporting that the NASCAR Driver has tested positive for methamphetamines. ESPN has learned the news from two independent sources.
 
Tunstall suffers heartbreaking 2-1 loss in 11th inning of softball State Championship game.
[Jun. 8, 2009] Jenn Soroka's RBI double off Tunstall's Brittnay Arnn in the bottom of the 11th lifted Broad Run to a 2-1 victory and the school's third consecutive AA State Softball Championship. Tunstall suffers its first loss on the year, finishing the 2009 campaign at 23-1. The defeat also marks the end of an era for Trojans skipper Roger Cook, who is retiring. Tunstall outlasts Patrick County 3-2 in extra innings, advances to state softball title game
[Jun. 7, 2009] Some folks say its tougher to beat a team multiple times while others debate it is easier. Make no mistake about it, the Tunstall Trojans didn't face an easy opponent, needing extra innings to ultimately defeat Patrick County 3-2 (in 8 innings) and advance to the state softball championship game. This was the 5th time this season Tunstall (23-0) has defeated the Lady Cougars of Patrick County (20-5), with each victory by just 1 run.
 
Wacky Wednesday sees Braves acquire McClouth, cut Glavine, promote Hanson.
[Jun. 4, 2009] In a crazy sequence of events, the Atlanta Braves released longtime icon Tom Glavine, promoted phenom prospect Tommy Hanson, and then acquired All-Star outfielder Nate McLouth (to replace Jordan Schaffer who was demoted to the minors) from the Pirates for 3 minor-leagues prospects.
