Braves swap shortstops with Blue Jays, sending Escobar to Toronto for Gonzalez.
[Jul. 15, 2010] In their quest to add some "pop" to the bottom of their lineup, the Atlanta Braves have acquired shortstop Alex Gonzalez and two minor leaguers from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for under-achieving shortstop Yunel Escobar and minor league pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes. The move may help solidify the the Braves as favorites to win the NL East, as Gonzalez's 17 home runs to date surpasses any current Braves player (Photo: MLB.com; Article: AJC.com).

Atlanta's McCann gives National League (and Braves?) home field advantage for "Fall Classic."
[Jul. 14, 2010] Should the Atlanta Braves be so fortunate as to make the 2010 World Series, they'll have one of their own to thank for giving them home field advantage. Braves catcher Brian McCann smacked a 3 run double in the 7th inning, giving the National League a 3-1 victory over the American League in the mid-summer classic. With their first victory over the A.L. in their last 14 tries, the N.L. team which makes the 2010 World Series will have home field advantage (Photo/Article; AJC.com).

UNC's Sturdivant cited for marijuana possession.
[Jul. 13, 2010] North Carolina Tar Heels starting linebacker Quan Sturdivant was cited for marijuana possession in a traffic stop Saturday morning in Albemarle, NC. UNC officials have confirmed they are aware of the situation and Tar Heels Head Football Coach Butch Davis stated Monday morning Sturdivant will face disciplinary action from within the program (Photo: Getty Images; Article: InsideCarolina.com).

Dillon pilotes #3 to Truck Series win at Iowa.
[Jul. 12, 2010] It certainly wasn't a stock car, but NASCAR truck series rookie Austin Dillon piloted the black #3 Bass Pro Shops truck to a victory in Sunday's Lucas Oil 200 at Iowa (Photo/Article: Nascar.SPEEDTV.com).

NASCAR sponsorship woes dominate "free-agency"
[Jul. 7, 2010] In most sports, free agency takes place beginning on a designated date. Nascar works differently, teams and drivers alike always seem poised to consider their next move. As Tom Bowles notes in his SI.com article, this year's "Silly Season" has been quieter than most, with most of the chatter hinging on drivers electing to stay with their current teams (Kasey Kahne aside) yet unsure of who will sponsor their rides (Photo: KevinHarvick.com/ Article: SI.com).

Former Duke PG Duhon heading to the Magic.
[Jul. 7, 2010] While the bigger fireworks are undoubtedly the ones already taking place in south Florida (with the Miami Heat retaining Dwayne Wayde and acquiring Chris Bosh), a story of interest in the Southside may be flying under the radar. Former Duke point guard Chris Duhon is leaving the Knicks and will sign a 4 year, $15 million deal with the Orlando Magic. Duhon is now the second former Blue Devil (Cave Spring alumn JJ Reddick the other) to play for the Magic (Photo/Article: Orlando Sentinel).

ACCSports.com: ACC better off that Big 10 has halted at move to 12 teams.
[Jun. 16, 2010] After the Big Ten (now Bigg-ER 12?) added Nebraska and the Pac-10 expanded to 11 teams with the addition of Colorado, the conference expansion dominos looked poised to hit the ACC. With FSU and Miami (along with Virginia Tech?) candidates to head to the SEC, the ACC looked poised to lose a couple linchpins. Instead, as ACCSports.com notes, the conference is probably better off that the conference expansion halted with the retention of the Big 12 (now New 10?).

Heading in opposite directions, Braves snatch first from Phillies.
[Jun. 1, 2010] Their trends would look similar if measured on a graph. Since the middle of May, the Atlanta Braves' offense has shown enough life to match their impressive array of starting pitchers. Meanwhile, the Phillies offense has been dormant the past two week, as Philly has dropped 9 of their last 13 games. The trend continued Monday as the Braves mauled the Phillies 9-3 to take over first place in the NL East (Photo/Article: AJC.com).

Strasburg set to premiere June 8.
[May 31, 2010] Washington Nationals executives, coaches, players, and fans have been waiting over 1 year for prized right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg to make his Major Leagure debut. They can now circle Tuesday, June 8 on their calendar, as the high priced 2009 number one overall pick debuts at Nationals Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates (Article: WashingtonTimes.com).

Kurt Busch uses late charge to finish dominating Coke 600.
[May 31, 2010] Kurt Busch made it 2 for 2 at Charlotte Motor Speedway Sunday night, clearing lapped traffic more effortlessly than Jamie McMurray (who finished 2nd) at the end of Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600 to win his second Cup race in as many weekends at NASCAR's "Home" track (Photo:Getty Images; Article: SI.com).

Bassett rallies from 0-2 deficit to defeat Martinsville in 2 OTs 3-2
[May 19, 2010] Down 2-0 with fewer than 12 minutes to play, a Piedmont District regular season Championship looked like a distant possibility for Bassett's boys soccer team. The Bengals, however, tallied 2 goals in the late stages of regulation to force overtime. Then, in the second O.T., senior Matt Chitwood's baseline shot from 15 yards out gave a Bassett a 3-2 lead and ultimately the victory. Despite the Bengals sweeping the regular season series with Tuesday night's, the two teams square off later this week in a tiebreaker contest to determine the regular season district championship (Photo/Article: MartinsvilleBulletin.com).

Catholics vs. Convicts series to resume.
[May 18, 2010] According to the Associated Press, the once infamous "Catholics vs. Convicts" football showdown pitting national media hogs Notre Dame and Miami against one another is poised to begin with a 2012 showdown at Soldier Field in Chicago. The two sides would then follow that with a "home-and-home" series, likely in 2014 and 2016 (Photo: Zazzle.com; Article: ACCSports.com).

ACCSports.com: ACC, ESPN/ABC on verge of new TV deal.
[May 16, 2010] The money isn't as high as what the SEC will receive, but the new deal on the verge of being signed by the ACC and ESPN/ABC is still rumored to bring the ACC an impressive $1.86 billion over a 12 year period. As ACCSports.com's Jim Young explains, a bidding war between Disney (which owns ABC/ESPN) and Fox helped push the contracts totals higher (Photo/Article: ACCSports.com).

Hamlin making noise on Johnson's rear.
[May 10, 2010] Is Denny Hamlin a serious challenger to 4-time Nascar Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson's throne? Time will tell. For now, says Tom Bowles in his SI.com article, the Chesterfield, VA native is indicating through his results that he could fit the bill (Photo: AP; Article: SI.com).

"Up-and-comer" has endorsement from Cup regualrs.
[May 9, 2010] Many kids have grown up dreaming that one day they'll be fortunate enough to turn a racing wish into a reality. For Steve Arpin, that opportunity has arrived. As Tom Bowles of SI.com notes, through hard work and a dedicated effort to network, plus some connections with Nascar Cup mainstays Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Carl Edwards, Arpin is on the fast track to making his dream a reality (Photo: CatchFence.com; Article: SI.com).

Passionate Poem from local athlete.
[May 7, 2010] Liza Moore has played field hockey since she was recruited as a sixth grader at Carlisle School. In 2009, her freshman year with the Chiefs program, she helped the team capture its second State Championship in program history. She joined us on the Friday, May 7 edition of Southside Connection to share a poem she wrote about journey.
