WVU's Hammond finishes Olympic competition

West Virginia University Rifle Coach Jon Hammond finished 42nd in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions qualifier with 1148 points at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Hammond opened competition on his final Olympic event at 9 a.m. Beijing-time.

Hammond, an Aberdeen, Scotland, native competing for Great Britain, opened with a strong showing in prone, shooting two 100 strings before closing with strings of 98 and 97 for 395 points.

Standing position proved difficult for Hammond, as he lost eight points in each of his final three strings for a total score of 370 points (94,92, 92, 92).

Hammond rebounded in the kneeling position and earned 383 points (95,96, 96, 96).

“Again, today’s 3P match wasn’t my best, but I am already in a reflective mood,” Hammond said. “I have been contemplating this
entire experience and how wonderful it has been, so I am not too disappointed or depressed.

“While the score is not what I envisioned, there are very few things that I regret or would have done differently.”

With his Olympic competition slate complete, Hammond will travel to London before returning to Morgantown to begin preseason with the WVU rifle squad.

Jian Qiu of China won the event with 1272.5 points, while Ukrain’s Jury Sukhorukov finished second with 1272.4 points. Rajmond Debevec of Slovenia won the bronze medal with 1271.7 points.
