WVU's Gillespie Nets Game-Winner in OT
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 13, 2008) “ In a game dominated by
the West Virginia University men's soccer team, junior Ryan Gillespie
capped off the match on Saturday evening against St. Francis (Pa.) at
Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium with a goal in the first overtime session. The
Mountaineers notched their first win of the season, improving to 1-3-1,
while St. Francis (Pa.) continues to search for its first victory,
dropping to 0-4-1.

Gillespie's first goal of the season came 4:05 into the first
overtime session. The Virginia Beach, Va., native, who stood on the left
wing just outside the 18-yard box, received a pass from the just above
the half-circle. Gillespie's high-arching shot sailed over Red Flash
goalkeeper Darius Motazed into the back of the net.

At the end of the contest, WVU totaled 22 shots while holding St.
Francis (Pa.) to just two. Junior Mo Travis and freshman Alex Silva led
all players on the field with five shots in the win.

The Mountaineers also dominated the corner kicks category, holding a 6-2
advantage over the
Red Flash.

WVU will return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium to open BIG EAST
conference-play against Villanova on Sept. 19. Kickoff is slated for 7
p.m.

 

Youngstown Defeats the Mountaineers
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 14, 2008) - The West Virginia
University volleyball team (2-6) fell to Youngstown State (7-3) today at
WVU Coliseum.

“We just came out too slow against Youngstown,” says Head
Coach Veronica Hammersmith. “We finally picked it up in the third and
fourth sets and almost got to the fifth, but we just waited to long to
make our move. It was a struggle for everybody today.”

The Penguins defeated the Mountaineers 3-1 (25-18, 25-15,
23-25, 26-24).

Freshman outside hitter Kylie Armbruster once again led the
Mountaineers with her third double-double of the season. Armbruster
posted 12 kills and 12 digs on the day.

Also leading the Mountaineers were senior middle blockers
Lisa Hough and Tammy Wolf. Hough finished second in kills with 11, while
Wolf captured 10 kills and three block assists.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Sept. 19, as
they host the annual WVU Classic at the WVU Coliseum. Match time is set
for 7:30 p.m.
