Mountaineer Madness Set For Oct. 10
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 24, 2008) – West Virginia
University will tip off the 2008-09 men's and women's basketball
seasons with Mountaineer Madness presented by Full Throttle Friday, Oct.
10, at 9:30 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. Admission to the event is free
with gates opening at 8:30 p.m.
A laser light show, a slam dunk contest and a two-ball
competition between both teams highlight just a few of the events that
will occur. Other festivities include the introduction of both the
men's and women's squads, team scrimmages and speeches from
women's coach Mike Carey and men's coach Bob Huggins.
Additional events include t-shirt give-a-ways, highlight videos
of both teams and performances from the Mountaineer pep band,
cheerleaders and dance team. MSN play-by-play announcer Tony Caridi will
emcee the event.
Mountaineer fans can also get a first look at the new
enhancements made to the WVU Coliseum. The new state-of-the-art video
board, lights, sound system and floor design are just some of the
highlights that will enhance the atmosphere for Mountaineer fans.
Mountaineer Madness presented by Full Throttle will begin with
the men's and women's team autograph sessions on the Coliseum floor
from 8:45 to 9:15 p.m.
The Mountaineer women's team won 25 games last season and
advanced to the NCAA Second Round for the second consecutive season. The
WVU men's team won 26 games last season and advanced to the NCAA Sweet
16 for the third time in the last four years.
Women's Basketball Season Tickets on Sale Monday
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 24, 2008) -- West Virginia
University Ticket Manager Debby Travinski today announced that 2008-09
women's basketball season tickets will go on sale Monday, Sept. 29.
Season tickets for WVU's 16-game home schedule will cost $80
each for lower level reserved seating in the WVU Coliseum. WVU faculty
and staff can purchase up to six tickets at a discounted rate of $64.
Season tickets can be purchased by calling 1-800-WVU GAME or online at
WVUGAME.com.
WVU will play host to 2008 NCAA tournament participants and BIG
EAST rivals, Pitt, Syracuse and Connecticut as well as postseason WNIT
participants USF, St. Johns, Indiana and Iona at the WVU Coliseum.
WVU will play host to DT3 on Sunday, Nov. 9, in an exhibition
game before opening regular season play with a home contest against
North Carolina Central Friday, Nov. 14.
Women’s Soccer Set For BIG EAST Road Opener
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 24, 2008)– For the third straight week,
the 11th-ranked West Virginia women’s soccer team will play a Thursday
night match. The Mountaineers travel to St. John’s for their BIG EAST
road opener on Sept. 25. Kickoff at Belson Stadium is slated for 4:30
p.m.
“Every game in the BIG EAST is tough and playing on the road is always
challenging,” says Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “It is important for
this team to stay focused for 90 minutes for us to be successful. Our
girls will be ready to play.”
St. John’s, led by 15th-year Head Coach Ian Stone, brings a record of
4-1-3 into today’s contest. The Red Storm are coming off a 1-1 draw with
Princeton on Sept. 21.
STJ returns 18 upperclassmen this season, including All-BIG EAST
players Tara Mendoza and Nicole Pasciolla, who anchor the defensive
effort.
Junior Amanda Santos leads the team in points with five and is the only
Red Storm player with multiple goals on the season. Santos was credited
with an assist last time out in a 1-1 tie with Princeton.
Between the posts for St. John’s is freshman Kristin Russell. Russell
has started all eight matches, allowing only one goal in 735 minutes
while making 45 saves.
The Mountaineers are led offensively by sophomore Megan Mischler and
senior Deana Everrett, who combine for seven of the team’s 16 goals on
the year. West Virginia has scored a goal in all nine games this
season.
A strong back line and sophomore goalkeeper Kerri Butler guide WVU’s
defensive efforts. The Mountaineers, owners of six shutouts, have
allowed only two goals in the last 580 minutes of soccer.
West Virginiaand St. John’s meet for the 13th time with WVU holding an
8-2-2 lead in the all-time series. The Mountaineers have won eight of
the last nine (8-0-1) meetings, including a 2-0 win in Morgantown last
season.
Ten of the 12 meetings have taken place in the regular season. The
other two meetings took place in the BIG EAST tournament in 2002 and
2003.
WVU last played in Queens in 2006, a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Belson
Stadium.
