West Virginia freshman Morgan Betscher scored two goals in powering the Mountaineers past Maryland, 3-0, Saturday evening at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.
Leading 1-0 at the half, Betscher found the back of the net in the 59th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out. The Decatur, Ill., native fired a shot around the Maryland wall and inside the near post for the 2-0 lead.
Betscher scored her second goal of the match a minute later on a trough ball from senior Deana Everrett. Betscher worked her way around the Terrapin goalkeeper for the score.
Everrett scored the game’s first goal in the 31st minute off a Mountaineer corner kick. Betscher served the ball into the box
where Everrett took a volley for the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kerri Butler recorded two first half saves in the shutout.
The Mountaineers registered nine shots on the night, including a 6-2 second half advantage.
WVU kicks off the 2008 season Friday, Aug. 22, against Towson. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
