Volleyball Powers Past Virginia Tech In Comeback Win, 3-2
Three players registered 13 kills apiece for the Herd in the win.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University's Kristin Marcum (Arlington,
Texas), Emily
Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jalicia Ross (Bank Village, Trinidad),
each notched
13 kills in the Thundering Herd's come-from-behind 3-2 (25-17, 23-25,
19-25, 15-11)
win in Friday night's non-conference volleyball match at the Cam Henderson
Center.
With the win, Marshall is now 3-1 overall, while Virginia Tech falls to
3-1 on the
season.
"We beat a very good Virginia Tech team," head coach Mitch Jacobs said
following the
victory. "It was fun to watch."
With the match knotted 2-2, Virginia Tech jumped out to an early 3-1 lead
before a
kill by Sullivan and a kill by Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) evened
the set
at 3-3. From there the teams tied six more times before Marshall opened up
a 12-9
lead. The Hokies would score twice more in the contest, but a pair of
attacking
errors and a service error sealed the match for the Herd.
"You hate to see a match end like that," Jacobs said. "I thought our kids
really
deserved it."
In the opening stanza, Marshall cruised to an 18-10 lead, and used a pair
of Marcum
kills and one each from Megan Carlson (Andover, Minn.), Layne Kehl
(Mountain Top,
Pa.) and Sullivan to seal a 25-17 victory and 1-0 advantage.
The second frame saw 10 lead changes and two lead changes before the
Hokies forced
two Marshall attacking errors to win the second set. Marcum earned four
kills in the
set but Virginia Tech's Taylor Parrish drove down 10 kills en route to the
win.
The teams again battled to 10 lead changes and a 16-16 tie, before
Virginia Tech
scored seven straight, and seven of the next 12 to extend its advantage to
2-1 in
the match.
In set four, Ross and Elizabeth Herman (Dunwoody, Ga.) registered five and
four
kills apiece to lift the Herd to a convincing 25-17 win and even the match
at two
sets apiece.
In addition to the 13 kills from Marcum, Sullivan and Ross, Carlson
finished with
seven, while Herman added five. Jessica Dhoore (LaPorte, Ind.) dug 13
balls while
Marcum and Sullivan each contributed nine digs on the night. Taylor Tanner
(Union,
Ky.), and fleming chipped in with eight digs each.
"Jalicia and Kristin played real well tonight, and Herman really stepped
up in the
fourth and fifth sets, and Taylor really ignited the defense and made a big
difference defensively in the match," Jacobs added.
Marshall returns to action Saturday, Sept. 6 when it hosts ETSU (2-2) at
1:00 p.m.
and Western Kentucky at 7:00 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center.

Emily Sullivan contributed 14 kills in the win.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University's Emily Sullivan (Cincinnati,
Ohio) totaled a match-best 14 kills to help lift the Thundering Herd to a
3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 19-25, 25-19) win over East Tennessee State in Saturday
afternoon's volleyball match at the Cam Henderson Center.
With the win Marshall improves to 4-1 on the season, while ETSU falls to
2-3 overall.
"I thought we played extremely well in sets one and two," head coach Mitch
Jacobs stated following the contest. "We were able to withstand their
runs."
Leading 2-1 in the match, Marshall surged to a 17-11 lead in the fourth
set. ETSU was able to pull to within three at 15-18 and then again at
17-20, but a pair of kills by Kristin Marcum (Arlington, Texas) and an
assisted block by Sullivan and Layne Kehl (Mountain Top, Pa.) sealed the
Herd's victory.
"It was great to see us regroup in set four," Jacobs said. "We were fueled
by the block, and I think that the block got us energized." Five of
Marshall's 11 total blocks came in that fourth set.
Following three ties and a pair of lead changes in the opening frame,
Marshall, leading 19-18, scored six of the next seven points on the
strength of two Sullivan kills and received a service ace by Marcum to
post a 1-0 advantage in the contest.
With the score 11-5 in favor of Marshall, the Herd used a 9-0 run to
continue its momentum and post an early 19-5 cushion in the second frame.
Cameron Yoho (Sisterville, W.Va.) and Sullivan notched three kills in the
stanza as Marshall posted a 25-13 win and two-set lead in the match.
After taking an early 2-0 lead in the match, Marshall fell behind early as
three Buccaneers notched two kills, while McKayla Barber chipped in three
kills, to take the third stanza.
"Our ball control broke down in the third set and that got our offense off
track." Jacobs stated.
Marcum finished with 10 kills and six digs, while Megan Carlson (Andover,
Minn.) and Jessica Dhoore (LaPorte, Ind.) totaled 10 digs apiece.
Kehl added six assisted blocks, while Marcum chipped in four. Sullivan and

Volleyball Falls To Western Kentucky, 3-0
Carlson and Herman tallied eight kills apiece in the losing effort.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University's Elizabeth Herman (Dunwoody, Ga.)
and Megan Carlson (Andover, Minn.) notched eight kills apiece, but Western
Kentucky's Megan Argabright blasted 10 to help lift the Hilltoppers to a
3-0 (17-25, 23-25, 13-25) sweep of the Thundering Herd in Saturday night's
volleyball match.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 4-2 overall, while Western Kentucky
remains unbeaten at 6-0 on the season.
"I think this team better learn how to play well under pressure or every
time we play a top level team like Cincinnati and Western Kentucky, the
pressure is going to keep crumbling us," head coach Mitch Jacobs said
following the match. "To be a young team is one thing to say, but it is
not an excuse because we are capable of playing tough."
Leading the match 2-0, Western Kentucky built a 19-10 lead and used 7-3
run to keep the set and the match out of reach for the Herd.
Western Kentucky built a 21-10 lead in the first frame before Marshall
swarmed back, scoring eight of the next 12 points, on the strength of two
kills by Emily Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio), but it was not enough, as the
Hilltoppers held on for a 25-17 victory and a one-set advantage.
Tied 20-20 in the second stanza, Western Kentucky took a two-point lead on
a kill by Argabright and Julia Noe, before Carlson and Herman answered
with kills of their own to knot the set a 22-22. A Marshall attacking
error and an Emily Teegarden kill extended the Hilltopper lead to 24-22,
before Jalicia Ross brought the Herd to within one with a monster kill
before Noe delivered a kill to seal the 2-0 advantage.
Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) finished with a match-high 27 assists
and added four kills and seven digs, while Ross notched a pair of kills,
two assisted blocks and a solo block. Taylor Tanner (Union, Ky.) led the
team with nine digs en route to joining Herman on the all-tournament
squad.
Noe was recognized as the tournament MVP and finished with 26 assists,
