Craig Littlepage Repeals Ban On Signs At Virginia Athletics Venues
CHARLOTTESVILLE--University of Virginia Athletics Director Craig
Littlepage announced Thursday that he is repealing the policy
prohibiting signs, banners and flags in all UVa athletics venues.
“The policy prohibiting signs, banners and flags in all UVa athletics
venues has become a distraction and has taken the focus away from
supporting our student-athletes,” Littlepage said. “Our football team
needs our support right now and that should be our collective focus.
With that in mind, I am repealing immediately the policy prohibiting
signs, banners and flags in all athletics venues. I encourage all of
our fans to be in attendance at Saturday night’s football game with
Maryland. My hope is our fans will wear orange and be prepared to
support the Cavaliers.”
Cory Alexander Joins the Virginia Sports Network
CHARLOTTESVILLE— CBS Outdoor and Virginia Sports Properties, the
multi-media rights partner of the University of Virginia athletics
department, announced today that former Cavalier point guard Cory
Alexander has joined the Virginia Sports Network. Alexander will
serve as analyst with play-by-play announcer Dave Koehn on Virginia
broadcasts during the 2008-09 men’s basketball season.
Alexander was a first round draft choice of the San Antonio Spurs in
1995 and played in seven seasons with four teams in the NBA. He
played for Virginia from 1992-95, scoring 1,286 points (15.1 ppg.)
and handing out 401 assists. Alexander ranks eighth on UVa’s career
assists list and 24th on the Cavaliers’ career scoring list. He was
a second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection in 1993.
Alexander replaces longtime analyst and former UVa player Jim
Hobgood. Hobgood has been the analyst on Virginia men’s basketball
broadcasts for the last 12 seasons. He was a three-year letterman for
the Cavaliers from 1971-73.
“We are excited to have Cory Alexander join our men’s basketball
broadcasts,” said Jim Kuznar, general manager of Virginia Sports
Properties. “We are also very appreciative of the many
contributions Jim Hobgood has made to the network during the last 12
years.”
Surging Cavaliers Seek Fourth-Straight Win At No. 12 North Carolina Friday
Kick-off is 7 p.m.
CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia men¹s soccer team, winners of three-straight
games and undefeated in ACC play, heads to North Carolina Friday night for a
7 p.m. match. The contest will be streamed over the internet on ACC Select.
Virginia (5-3-0, 2-0-0 ACC) is coming off of a road victory at Virginia
Tech, 2-1, last Friday. The Cavaliers got two goals from midfielder Matt
Mitchell, including the game-winner in the 80th minute, to win their
third-straight contest and remain unbeaten in the conference.
Mitchell is one of five Cavaliers with multiple goals this year. Freshman
Tony Tchani leads the squad with seven goals and two assists for 16 points,
while fellow first-year Chris Agorsor had tallied four goals before
suffering a season-ending knee injury during UVa¹s match-up vs. Central
Connecticut State (Sept. 23). Mitchell¹s three goals are the third-best
total, while Jimmy Simpson and Brian Ownby have each scored twice this year.
With two victories in league play, the Cavaliers have already surpassed
their ACC win total from a season ago (UVa finished 1-5-2 in the ACC in
2007), and are receiving votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches
Association of America top 25 poll (released Sept. 30).
North Carolina (8-1-1, 1-1-0) is currently ranked No. 12 in both the NSCAA
and Soccer America top 25. The Tar Heels are unbeaten at home with a 6-0-0
record at Fetzer Field and are led by Eddie Ababio (seven goals, four
assists) and Brian Shriver (seven goals, one assist). In goal for UNC, Jacob
Wescoe has started eight games and allowed five goals, while Brooks Haggerty
has made the other two starts and allowed five goals.
North Carolina¹s conference loss came at the hands of Boston College, 4-1,
while the Tar Heels defeated NC State, 2-1, for their ACC win. UNC was
picked to finish fourth in the ACC.
In the all-time series with UNC, Virginia has a 33-33-7 record. Last season,
the Cavaliers came away with a 2-1 victory in Charlottesville.
On deck for UVa is a two-game homestand. Liberty visits Klöckner Stadium on
Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., followed by a conference match with Clemson on
Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m.
Virginia’s 2008-09 men’s basketball season begins on Nov. 16 when
in-state rival VMI visits the John Paul Jones Arena.
