Virginia junior golfer Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville, Va.)
defeated Kristen Park of Buena Park, Calif. to advance to the second round
of match play at the 2008 U.S. Women¹s Amateur Championship being held at
the Eugene (Ore.) Country Club. Neuhauser won 3 & 2 and will face Lucy Nunn
of Lawton, Okla. in Thursday¹s round of 32 at 11:10 a.m. ET. If she wins
Neuhauser will compete in the Round of 16 Thursday afternoon at 4:20 p.m.
ET.
Nunn is a rising senior at Arkansas who won the Southern Amateur
Championship earlier this year. She defeated UVa senior Kristen Simpson 4 &
3 in the quarterfinals of that tournament.
Seeded fourth in match play, Neuhauser shot 2-under 142 during the 36-hole
stroke play portion of the tournament.
The U.S. Women¹s Amateur is one of the United States Golf Association¹s
original three championships. It was first conducted in 1895, shortly after
the inaugural U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open. The Women¹s Amateur has since been
conducted every year except 1917-18, when it was temporarily suspended
because of World War I, and 1942-45, when it was suspended because of World
War II.
The championship is open to female amateurs who have USGA handicap indexes
not exceeding 5.4
