Sargent Named Virginia Collegiate Golf Coach of the Year
Virginia Places two on All-State Team
(NORFOLK, VA)- Virginia¹s head men¹s golf coach Bowen Sargent has been named
the Virginia
Collegiate Golf Coach of the Year by the Virginia Golf Coaches Association.
A pair of Cavalier players were also named to the all-state squad.
This year Sargent led Virginia back to the NCAA Championships for the first
time since 2000. The only unranked team in the field, the Cavaliers finished
26th overall and were 10th at the NCAA East Regional. During the season the
Cavaliers won the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate in Puerto Rico and repeated as
champions of the Cavalier Classic. UVa's other strong showings included a
third-place finish at Florida State¹s Seminole Intercollegiate and a
fourth-place effort at Notre Dame¹s Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic.
First-year players Will Collins and Steven Rojas were second-team selections
to the VGCA All-State team.
Collins (Salisbury, N.C.), a freshman, led UVa in stroke average as a
freshman at 73.31. He was the Cavaliers' top finisher at the NCAAs (39th)
and the ACC Championships (26th). Rojas (Aadorf, Switzerland) posted a 74.11
stroke average as a sophomore. He led the team in scoring three times,
including the NCAA East Regional. He shot the low tournament score of the
year when he posted a 4-under 209 at the NCAA East Regional.
