Marshall Drops Decision to Duquesne, 4-1
Herd looks to rebound against Richmond Saturday
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Duquesne Duke used two goals in each half to take
down the Marshall Thundering Herd 4-1 Friday at Rooney Field in
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Marshall (0-4) fell behind early on in the 11th minute when Alex Trujillo
got a header past senior Greg Walter (Slippery Rock, Pa.).
The Dukes (2-0-3) would take a 2-0 lead into the half off of a goal from
Ben Horner.
"We got off to a slow start against a good team," head coach Bob Gray
said. "They (Duquesne) finished their opportunities. We got back into it
in the second half, but didn't come up with enough."
In the 53rd minutes, Duquesne extended its lead to 3-0. Marshall found
itself on the board when junior Michael Bolt (Hendersonville, Tenn.) found
the back of the net with an assist to Kendall Sutton (Wheaton, Md.).
Just after 67 minutes, Walter was replaced in the net by junior transfer
Robert Smith (Niagara Falls, Ontario). Smith allowed one goal and had
three saves in his Marshall debut.
"We got to look into reorganizing and restructuring things to shake it up
to get our first win."
Marshall will wrap-up play in Pittsburgh with a match against Richmond
Saturday at 5 p.m.

SHOOTING STARS
Behind Sam Arthur's two-goal performance, the Gamecock men's
soccer team collected a 3-0 shutout victory over Lehigh in its opening
contest of the 2008 adidas Gamecock Classic. The victory improves
Carolina's record to 2-2-1 for the year. Arthur's multi-goal performance
was his first of the season, while Gamecock goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer
collected four saves en route to his seventh career shutout in net.
Arthur led the Gamecock offensive attack with four shots on goal
and two tallies to take the team lead with four goals in just five games
this season. Junior midfielder Jeff Scannella collected his first goal of
the season, while sophomore midfielder Blake Brettschneider, junior
defender Mario Burstein and junior forward Bryan Lowder each contributed
one assist in the Gamecock victory.
The SMU men's soccer team - ranked No. 4 in the country in the
current National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll -
scored the only goal it would need in the fourth minute Friday night and
junior goalkeeper Craig Hill picked up his third shutout in five games as
the Mustangs cruised to a 3-0 win over George Mason in the first round of
the Prego's Express Italian Men's Soccer Invitational at Westcott Field.
Senior forward Manuel Mariel scored the game-winning goal in the
fourth minute. Senior midfielder Gabe Arredondo dribbled to the corner and
shook a defender to fire a crossing pass toward the goal, which GMU
goalkeeper didn't handle cleanly. When the ball popped free, Mariel popped
it into the back of the net from point-blank range. Paulo da Silva and
Diogo de Almeida added goals in the win.
In UCF's 3-1 loss to William & Mary, Kevan George scored his
first career goal for the Knights to tie the game in the 60th minute.
