MEN’S Virginia Surges Past Hofstra, 4-2Tchani scores two goals to lead Cavs CHARLOTTESVILLE Tony Tchani scored two goals and the Virginia men¹s soccerteam topped Hofstra, 4-2, Sunday night at Klöckner Stadium. Chris Agorsorand Matt Mitchell also netted goals for UVa (2-2-0), which won itssecond-straight game. ³Once again we had good chances offensively,² Virginia head coach GeorgeGelnovatch said. ³We finished four of those chances and scored on our firsttwo shots of the game. I think our staff did a good job of managing minutestonight after playing 110 minutes on Friday night at George Mason.² Eighteen Cavaliers saw action in all, and six different players registeredshots on goal. Tchani put Virginia on the board with his first career goalin the fifth minute, when Hofstra was whistled for a foul just outside thepenalty area. Tchani stepped up and struck a bending ball into the left sideof the net, past the outstretched arms of Pride goalkeeper James Winters. Four minutes later, Tchani beat Winters again, this time with a hard, lowshot for his second goal of the night. Fellow freshman Hunter Jumper andredshirt freshman Jimmy Simpson earned the assists on the play. Hofstra got on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute on a Brett Carrington goal.Virginia bounced back, however, and Matt Mitchell scored in the 38th minuteto preserve UVa¹s two-goal lead. The play began with a long ball fromJumper, which was flicked ahead by Simpson to Mitchell, who finished farpost. Agorsor made the score 4-1 in the 77th minute, when he headed home a NeilBarlow corner kick. For Agorsor, it was his team-leading third goal of theseason, while it marked Barlow¹s first assist of 2008. The Pride (1-2-1) pulled to within 4-2 in the 81st minute when MitchellDemont fired a shot past Virginia goalkeeper Dan Louisignau off of assistsby Justin Flood and Jamal Neptune. Hofstra would get no closer, however, andVirginia came away with its second-straight victory. Louisignau finished with four saves in his fourth-straight start in goal.Pride goalkeeper James Winters had six saves in defeat. The Cavaliers held a 14-9 advantage in shots, while each team took fourcorner kicks. Virginia is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 13, at VCU. Woszczynski was making just his third career start andrecorded his first career shutout in a 1-0 win over Mercer on Sunday,while Johnson also notched a 1-0 win over Stetson on Sunday, stopping 18shots and notching six saves. The senior forward scored a goal in each of the Mustangs'two matches over the weekend, a 2-0 win over perennial power Stanford, anda 1-1 tie at No. 8 Cal. The No. 7 Mustangs improved to 3-0-1 on theseason, and da Silva is the team's leading scorer with eight points onthree goals and two assists. The weekly honor is the first of da Silva'scareer. Making just the third start in his career and second start this season,Woszczynski recorded his first career shutout in a 1-0 overtime victoryover Mercer on Sunday. Woszczynski was spectacular in the net, making foursaves en route to the victory. In the opening minutes of overtime, thesophomore goalkeeper faced a one-on-one with a Mercer player and made afingertip save to keep the game scoreless. On the season, Woszczynski hasa 0.97 goals allowed average in two contests, and has made six saves. Thisis Woszczynski's first career weekly C-USA honor. CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (9/8) SEAN JOHNSON - UCF So., GK, Lilburn, Ga. Johnson continued his early season strong play with a 1-0 shutout win overStetson on Sunday.š He faced 18 shots and tallied six saves to post histhird career shutout and help UCF to their first win in 2008.š In threegames this season, Johnson has 22 saves which is currently top on C-USA.He also leads the league in saves per game at 7.33. (September 8, 2008) West Virginia University women’ssoccer players Greer Barnes and Deana Everrett were honored today fortheir weekend play at the First Tennessee Lady Vols Classic.Barnes was named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Weekand Everrett was named to the 11-person TopDrawerSoccer Team of theWeek.Barnes, a Rye, N.Y., native helped the Mountaineer defense record itsthird shutout of the season in the two-game tournament in Knoxville,Tenn. Barnes logged all 200 minutes of action and was named to theAll-Tournament Team and the Defensive MVP.The senior defender took a game-high three shots in WVU’s win 1-0 overNo. 20 Tennessee. Barnes and her teammates kept the Lady Vols off thescoreboard and held two-time SEC Player of the Year Kylee Rossie to oneshot on goal.In WVU’s second game of the tournament, Barnes totaled three shotsagainst Washington State.
