SHOOTING STARS

· The Conference USA men's soccer season opened tonight and five
schools won their openers with four of those wins coming as shutouts.

· Blaine Gosalves and Zach Nulisch each knocked in a goal for
Tulsa in a 2-0 shutout victory over Georgia Southern.

· Behind two goals each from freshman Taylor White and senior Michael
Strong, the Kentucky men's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 season-opening
win over Central Arkansas in the opening round of the UK Invitational .

· The SMU men's soccer team, ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation
in preseason polls, kicked off the season and the Tim McClements era in
convincing fashion Friday afternoon, shutting out No. 27 Old Dominion,
2-0, in the first game of the University of Virginia Classic.

· Senior forward Derek Rios recorded a goal and an assist to lead the
UAB men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Oral Roberts on Friday in the
opening round of the Memphis Diadora Classic.

· In front of a record crowd on a hot and balmy night in
Columbia, the South Carolina men's soccer team collected a 2-0 shutout
victory over Clemson in its season opener on Friday. The 6,102 fans on
hand were an all-time high at Stone Stadium. The sophomore duo of Sam
Arthur and Blake Brettschneider each collected one goal and one assist in
the match, while goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer tallied three saves in net to
secure the shutout for Carolina. The victory marks South Carolina's
second-consecutive win over the Tigers, marking the first back-to-back
Gamecock wins over Clemson since the 1994-1995 campaigns.
